WHAT DOES THE REGULATION SAYS
La FIA, dal 1986, anno di introduzione della prima normativa riguardante gli standard minimi di omologa relativi alle qualità di resistenza alla fiamma delle tute, non ha mai variato i parametri richiesti. La norma 8856, entrata in vigore nel 2000, è andata a indicare ulteriori richieste su alcune dettagli della tuta (la cintura, per esempio). Tra le varie richieste della normativa, la più indicativa è quella che impone un aumento della temperatura inferiore ai 24°C per un corpo protetto da una tuta esposta a una fiamma per 11 secondi. Il sandwich a triplo strato della One-S1 non solo rispetta questa normativa, ma addirittura offre una prestazione migliore del 35% rispetto alle richieste FIA. Tutto questo tenendo presente che a parità di taglia, in 20 anni di sviluppi, il peso totale della tuta si è praticamente dimezzato.

FIRE PROOF TEST AND THERMOMAN TEST
While FIA essentially didn’t strengthen the levels of flame resistance, OMP itself pursued a strict increasement of its own standards, in order to offer even more safety to the drivers. For this purpose, OMP availed itself of tests whose level is above FIA requests. For example, the ONE S-1 was submitted to Thermoman Test, in cooperation with Dupont’s technical research center. This test literally overwhelms the suit with a real fire storm for 10 seconds. The news from the final result sheet were good: the sensors dislocated all over the dummy didn’t register third-degree burns, while the second-degree burns didn’t affect more than the 32% of the body. At such conditions, the chances of survival are over 90%.

3, THE PERFECT NUMBER
There’s one thing OMP is sure of: when you work for safety, you must never lower your guard. Every decision made by OMP research and development department never calls into question the very high safety standards achieved by modern fire retardant suits. For ONE S-1 the best solutions have been adopted, to elevate the flame resistance above the compulsory level requested by FIA. The choice of a three-layer “sandwich” (two jersey layers inside, one on the outside) is the most safe, with regard to fire retardancy. It’s easily understood: when exposed to flame, we would instinctively state that it’s preferable to be protected by three layers of fire retardant fabric instead of one. This is true, indeed: not only because three layers are a triple barrier, but also, the air between one layer and another becomes an actual shield that protects the driver. But what about the increase of weight that a triple layer obviously brings? OMP technicians have brilliantly kept this issue under control: with an accurate choice of the fibers, the fabrics are ultra light. If we compare the ONE S-1 to the double-layered First-S, the entry level OMP suit, the weight is nearly halved.
